  • Ask students to gather in a common area of the classroom with their whiteboards and whiteboard markers. Write the word pattern on the board.
  • Instruct students to think of a pattern and write it on their whiteboards. Keep the instructions simple, so as not to direct students any further. Assess background knowledge about patterns, noticing whether students draw shapes, words, or numbers.
  • Have students share their patterns with a partner, and call on a few nonvolunteers to share with the whole class.
  • Invite students to think of real-life patterns they have seen before. (e.g., the way bricks are organized on a building, a design that is on socks, the markings on a butterfly)
