Powers of 10
Teach your students to recognize patterns of zeros when multiplying by powers of 10 with exponents.

Learning Objectives
Students will be able to multiply by powers of 10 with exponents.
The adjustment to the whole group lesson is a modification to differentiate for children who are English learners.
Introduction
(5 minutes)
- Write 10 x 1 = 10, 10 x 10 = 100, 10 x 100 = 1,000, and 1 0x 1,000 = 10,000 on the board. (Note: write each new equation above the previous one, making sure to align the equal signs)
- Ask students to look for patterns and discuss with a partner.
- Discuss patterns as a class (i.e., each equation is ten times greater than the one before; each equation has the same number of zeros in the product as in the two factors). Guide the discussion as needed.
- Tell students that today they will be studying powers of ten (10 multiplied by itself a certain number of times).
Beginning
- Allow students to use their home language (L1) or new language (L2) in their discussions.
- Define the word pattern and show one in an everyday example (e.g., AABB pattern, etc.).
- Ask students to restate the definition for "powers of ten" and provide an example.
Intermediate
- Provide the following sentence starters for their discussions in their L1:
- "I notice..."
- "I wonder..."
- "There are..."
- Ask students to rephrase the definition for "powers of ten" and provide an example or two.
- Write the academic language they can use throughout the lesson on the board as you introduce the language.
