A Sight Word Celebration!

Celebrate your students’ sight word success with a sight word celebration lesson! Customizable for use with any sight words, this lesson can be implemented after teaching a group of sight words or at the end of the year.

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to identify sight words when they hear the words read aloud. Students will be able to read kindergarten sight words and use them in the context of a sentence.

The adjustment to the whole group lesson is a modification to differentiate for children who are English learners.
EL adjustments

Introduction

(5 minutes)
  • Before the lesson, using sight words that will be reinforced in this lesson, place one prepared gift flip card in each box, along with a sticker or eraser.
  • Wrap the boxes in old wrapping paper. Prepare one gift per student.
  • Distribute the gifts to each student.
  • Tell the students that they will be sharing their gifts with other students and that they will be practicing the sight words they have learned during the year.

Beginning

  • Preview the target sight words with students before the start of the lesson. Practice identifying, reading, and using the sight words in a sentence.

Intermediate

  • Have students turn and talk to share their definition of a gift with a peer.
  • Provide visuals to accompany any challenging sight words.
